Earlier this year, the "Mediterranean diet"
turned 15. Of course, for the people who actually live in the
Mediterranean region, that's an absurd notion. They have been eating
meals of fish, vegetables, and whole grains drizzled with olive oil,
then washing it all down with a glass or two of wine for generations.
What actually turned 15 is the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid, an attempt by nutrition experts to promote an alternative to the typical overprocessed, fat- and sugar-laden American diet.
President Obama once again makes the case for his economic recovery plan and speaks of the need for health care reform in his weekly video/radio address.
He also pledges again to bring the federal budget under control:
"Like
every family going through hard times, our country must make tough
choices. In order to pay for the things we need -- we cannot waste
money on the things we don't.
"My administration inherited a
$1.3 trillion budget deficit, the largest in history. And we've
inherited a budgeting process as irresponsible as it is unsustainable.
For years, as Wall Street used accounting tricks to conceal costs and
avoid responsibility, Washington did, too.
"These kinds of
irresponsible budgets -- and inexcusable practices -- are now in the
past. For the first time in many years, my administration has produced
a budget that represents an honest reckoning

The February employment report, released Mar. 6, was not as bad as some
on Wall Street had feared, but it was still pretty lousy. Nonfarm
payrolls fell another 651,000 in February, while the unemployment rate
jumped to 8.1% from 7.6%. The deep job losses point to protracted
weakness in the U.S. labor market, with Standard & Poor's
forecasting another 2 million job losses by fall.
Wall Street economists and analysts had plenty to say about the jobs report and other key topics on Mar. 6. Here's a sampling:

February payroll and unemployment data came in pretty much as
anticipated. The Labor Dept. reported Friday in its Payroll Survey that
the U.S. economy shed 651,000 jobs for the month. In the separate

Revisions to January and December cropped an additional 161,000
jobs. Cumulative jobs lost since the current recession began

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov are meeting in Geneva in their
first formal talks since the secretary assumed her new post.
The
discussions are expected to cover world tensions from Afghanistan, to
U.S. plans for a missile defense shield in Europe, to Iran's nuclear
program.
Earlier in Brussels, Clinton described Europe as an
essential U.S. partner and pledged to continue building the
trans-Atlantic relationship.
On ties with Russia, Clinton
noted good chances for cooperation on such issues as terrorism and
non-proliferation. But she said the sides disagree on certain things,
stressing Washington's condemnation of Russia's military action in
Georgia last year.
She criticized Russia for using energy as a
tool of intimidation and said U.S engagement with Russia in no way
